A man is dead after fleeing authorities and crashing into an oncoming vehicle Friday evening during a police chase near North Branch, Minn., authorities said.

A Chisago County sheriff's deputy vehicle also crashed into the car driven by the man, who has not yet been identified. He was found dead inside his car, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The deputy and the female driver of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to the news release, at 2:50 p.m., the Sheriff's Office was assisting North Branch police in trying to locate a man who had violated a no contact order and who had an outstanding order for protection.

At the same time, the man called the Sheriff's Office "demanding to speak" with the woman he was allegedly not supposed to contact. The man then threatened to harm himself, officers and others, saying he would start "running people over … shoot law enforcement officers … random people," and himself, the news release said.

About 10 minutes later, at 3 p.m., a North Branch business was on lockdown because the man was threatening to harm people there.

A Chisago County sheriff's deputy found the man in neighboring Isanti County. He refused to comply, and fled. The deputy began chasing the man, who was swerving into oncoming traffic, the new release said.

Before the deputy could stop the vehicle, the man crashed his car into an oncoming vehicle driven by a woman near the County Road 5 and Vassar Street NE. intersection. The deputy then crashed into the man's vehicle.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting with crash reconstruction.
