A suspect who fled from Minneapolis police into New Brighton on Thursday had a loaded gun and bullet-resistant vest in the car, police said.

Police are searching for the suspect, who abandoned a car and ran away in the area of Silver Lake Road and Spring Street, just inside the New Brighton city limits.

The incident began just before 10 p.m. near 37th Avenue NE. and East River Road, on the border of Minneapolis and Fridley, when a Minneapolis officer attempted to pull over a driver who "was acting suspiciously," Minneapolis police said on the department's Facebook page.

The driver fled and police chased the car to the Silver Lake Road and Spring Street area, where the suspect pulled over and ran off. Police found a loaded gun and bullet-resistant vest in the suspect's vehicle, according to the statement.

Police have not provided a description of the suspect; police spokesman John Elder said the investigation is continuing.
