Leisure briefs: Activities to resume at Bielenberg fieldhouse

Those who want to try stand-up paddleboarding can attend a demonstration Sept. 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Point Douglas Park.

The newly expanded fieldhouse at Bielenberg Sports Center has opened for limited use.

Open walk/run programs are scheduled between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, Aug. 25-30. A monthly schedule is available online at www.bielenbergsportscenter.com or in person at BSC.

Run/walk daily passes ($3 each), 10-visit punch cards ($20 each) and annual passes ($45) will be available for purchase at BSC beginning Monday, Aug. 18. The annual pass is valid Sept. 1, 2014, through Aug. 31, 2015.

Guests purchasing an annual walk/run pass before Sept. 1 will be allowed free access to walk/run programs for the remainder of August.

Rental of the fieldhouse will begin in September for all field uses. Groups interested in renting time should call Bielenberg Sports Center at 651-714-3740 or send an e-mail to Dave Black, BSC manager, at dblack@ci.woodbury.mn.us.

Paddleboarding at Point Douglas Park

Morning Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) will be offered two Saturdays at Point Douglas Park, along with a demonstration at the park Sept. 6.

The demonstration will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It includes a brief instruction followed by the opportunity to try SUP. All equipment will be provided. No registration is required.

The paddleboarding programs will be 10-11 a.m. Aug. 30 and Sept. 13, guided by Prescott Paddle on the Lower St. Croix River. All equipment is provided.

Registration is required for both programs. To sign up, call the St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park Contact Station at 651-430-8240. Morning Paddleboarding is $30 per person per class. A Washington County Parks vehicle permit is not required at Point Douglas Park.

Participants must be 12 years of age or older and be able to swim. Each minor must be accompanied by an adult. Refunds will be offered only if the class is canceled because of weather. For weather cancellations, see www.co.washington.mn.us/sup, then follow the link to Prescott Paddle. Additional rain dates will be added as necessary and participants will be given the choice to reschedule.

Point Douglas Park is off Point Douglas Drive South (Hwy. 10) just east of St. Croix Trail South (County Rd. 21) on the Minnesota side of the river at 14500 Point Douglas Drive, Denmark Township. For more information, see www.co.washington.mn.us/sup

Storyteller tells tales by park campfire

Join storyteller Dwight Wilcox for St. Croix Legends, an evening of tales around a campfire at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the outdoor amphitheater at Lake Elmo Park Reserve.

S’mores fixings will be available while supplies last. Bring camp chairs and blankets for this family-friendly program. Lake Elmo Park Reserve is at the intersection of County Rds. 19 and 10 (one mile north of Interstate 94) in Lake Elmo. The program is free with a park permit ($5/day or $25/annual). At St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, Remarkable Reptiles will present a program on five groups of reptiles at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30.
