A St. Paul motorcyclist led officers from North St. Paul, Maplewood and the State Patrol on a chase that reached speeds of 85 miles per hour on city streets before it ended at his front door, according to charges.

The reason?

"He wanted to get home to see his girlfriend before going to jail," according to charges filed Monday in Ramsey County District Court against Nathan A. Collier, 33.

Collier faces one count of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle for the March 28 chase that started on McKnight Road at E. Skillman Avenue in North St. Paul, traveled south into Maplewood and then west into St. Paul, where it ended at Collier's home in the 1300 block of Winchell Street.

According to the complaint: A North St. Paul police officer tried to stop Collier for an expired registration about 10:13 p.m. Collier, who also had a suspended license, sped away when the officer activated his siren.

Collier reached speeds of 85 mph southbound on McKnight, where the posted speed was 35, the complaint said. He drove through a red light at McKnight and Larpenteur Avenue, continued southbound as McKnight turned into Lakewood Drive and ran another red light at Maryland Avenue.

Collier eventually was forced to stop behind several vehicles waiting for a red light at Lakewood Drive and Stillwater Road.

At that point, the officer got out of his squad car and approached the motorcycle with his gun drawn. He then yelled at Collier to get off the bike, but Collier sped toward the officer, who tried unsuccessfully to grab the motorcyclist.

The officer was unharmed. Maplewood police and state troopers joined the pursuit, which ended when Collier drove into his driveway and ran into his house. Collier was arrested inside the home.

Collier told police he fled because authorities had issued warrants for his arrest, the complaint said. He has a long history of traffic violations, and court records show that his license has been revoked since 2002.

A warrant was issued on March 17 for his arrest for failing to appear at a hearing on a 2013 driving after revocation charge in Washington County. Another warrant was issued for him in Washington County in a 2012 traffic case.
