A driver apparently annoyed that he was going to be late for work ran over a construction worker's foot in downtown St. Paul.

According to police reports, the accident happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday as construction crews were working at 6th and Sibley streets near Mears Park.

Two workers were attempting to stop traffic to make way for a semi truck to navigate at the site when one of the men stopped a vehicle northbound on Sibley at the crosswalk, said Sgt. Paul Paulos, a spokesman with the St. Paul police. Paulos said the male driver of the vehicle started to become irritated and swore at the workers saying, "I got to get to [expletive] work."

When the driver started to inch forward, one of the workers slammed his hands on the vehicle's hood and told him to stop, but instead, the driver accelerated. The first worker was able to get out of the way of the speeding vehicle, but the second worker wasn't able to move in time. His right foot was run over by the vehicle which the driver stopped and got out of to apparently assess the damage before he left. Luckily, the worker had on safety boots so he wasn't hurt, Paulos said.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning, however, the first worker was able to take a photograph of the car and driver who was identified in police reports as a 64-year-old Bloomington man.
