Friends of the Mississippi River will work with partners Washington County, Washington Conservation District and the City of Cottage Grove on a wetland ecology tour in Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, the group’s newest restoration site.
Learn about wetland plant life, then use dip nets to get a closer look at macroinvertebrates living in the marsh. Learn how these plants and creatures play a role in water quality, and how the local restoration project at the park helps waters and wildlife as well.
The tour will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the park. The tour is free but capacity is limited and advance registration is required. Dip nets will be provided.

Kits offered for tests by private well users
Those who use private wells should test their water once a year for coliform bacteria, and at least once every other year for nitrates, and the Washington County Department of Public Health and Environment offers testing services.
The cost for the “basic” drinking water test, for nitrates and coliform bacteria, is $44. Tests are also available for hardness and other common minerals.
Residents can request a kit and collect the sample themselves. Drop-off times are 8-10 a.m. every Tuesday at the main Government Center in Stillwater, the Cottage Grove Service Center or the Headwaters Service Center in Forest Lake.
Additional drop-off times are 8-10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, and Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Stillwater location only.
Anyone seeking a testing kit or who has questions can call the county at 651-430-6655. More information is also available online at: www.co.washington.mn.us/water.
