X’s on roads will be used for aerial photography

Several large white “X’s” appearing on Washington County roadways last week will serve as “targets” for a new set of aerial photos for the county’s geographic information system (GIS) maps.

The county contracts with a company to take photos from the sky every few years; the last set of photos was taken in 2009, said County Surveyor Michael Welling.

Maps are used by assessors, engineers and the county sheriff’s and attorney’s offices, among other county offices. In addition, private individuals, such as developers, real estate agents, planners and surveyors, can pay to get access to the maps, Welling said.

The photos are more accurate than the ones available on popular websites, Welling said, and part of that has to do with the X’s. They are “targets” placed at known survey points, which can be seen on the aerial photos and are used to adjust the photography and create more accurate maps.
