The second of two women who survived a mid-April crash into the St. Croix River that killed their friends has been released from the hospital, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Kalaiselvi Vijayakumar, 25, was released from Regions Hospital in St. Paul, a hospital spokesman said. Kalaiselvi and Deepa Vellusamy, 25, were hospitalized for several weeks after the April 13 plunge into the river in Stillwater.

Rohini Krishnamurthy, 27, and Mohanraj Pothiraj, 28, died. The four are from Tamil Nadu, in the southernmost India, where first names are used for identification.

The four contract workers were on a sightseeing excursion in Stillwater when Rohini mistook the gas pedal for the brake in the sport-utility vehicle she was driving.

The four could be heard in a frantic 911 call pleading for help as the vehicle sank. Rescuers arrived minutes later to find the SUV submerged, its lights shining from under the water.
