How you can help

Last update: May 27, 2008 - 9:16 PM

• Cleanup help: Hugo officials are asking for groups of between 10 and 25 volunteers to help Saturday with cleaning up after the tornado.

Volunteers must be 16 or older and should plan to meet at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Washington County Service Center at Headwaters Parkway and Hwy. 61 in Forest Lake. Please register by calling the city of Hugo at 651-762-6300. Volunteers are encouraged to carpool to the center.

Lutheran Social Service/Lutheran Disaster Response is helping coordinate and said that police will stop anyone without a wristband. Volunteers must take a shuttle from the service center to the disaster site. The shuttle will run throughout the day.

Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and rakes, wear boots or tennis shoes and bring rain gear, if necessary. Tetanus shots will be provided.

Donations can be sent to Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, 2485 Como Av., St. Paul, MN 55108, for Hugo Tornado or go to www.lssmn.org/donate.

• Benefit concert: Hugo's neighbors to the north in Forest Lake are turning a school concert into a fundraiser for those affected by Sunday's tornado. Proceeds from tonight's "POPS! on the Green" concert will be donated to Hugo relief funds, the Forest Lake School District said.

The outdoor concert begins at 7 p.m. at the high school, 6101 N. Scandia Trail. Admission is $5, and that includes an ice cream dessert.

• Donations accepted: Two funds have been set up to accept donations for victims of the tornado and another fund for victims of north metro storm damage:

Hugo Relief Fund c/o Lake Area Bank, 1400 E. Hwy. 96, White Bear Lake, MN 55110.

Hugo Relief Fund c/o U.S. Bank, 14431 Forest Blvd. N., Hugo, MN 55038.

The Salvation Army is collecting donations for the north metro area. To donate: call 1-800-SAL-ARMY, visit www.thesalarmy.org or send a check to 2445 Prior Av. N., Roseville, MN 55113. Designate your contribution "north metro storm."
