As development takes shape, a retail center to serve the growing community will be ready.
For the third time in three years, Woodbury is getting a large grocery store, this one serving the developing areas in the south part of the city and the northern part of Cottage Grove.
Edina-based Jerry's Enterprises Inc. -- which operates 37 grocery stores in three states under the retail banners of Jerry's Foods, Cub Foods, County Market and Save-A-Lot -- plans to begin building a 68,000-square-foot store in June at the southwest corner of Radio Drive and Bailey Road as part of a retail/residential complex to be called Bielenberg Gardens. It's named for Orville Bielenberg, the city's first mayor, whose farm was nearby.
The 28-acre "urban village" is part of the city's master plan as it opens up the next frontier for development that is expected to add 6,000 homes over the next decade. The initial 600-acre portion, called the Fields of Woodbury, is now open for preliminary platting. It will eventually be part of a transformation of more than 2,100 acres of mostly open farmland in southern Woodbury.
The first homes will begin sprouting this summer, and plans are also taking shape in northern Cottage Grove. The development of Bielenberg Gardens -- which may eventually include townhouses, senior housing and walking trails -- coincides with an expansion and remodeling of Bielenberg Sports Center across the street and a $3 million project expanding Radio Drive.
The grocery store will take up about two-thirds of the retail space.
"We're very excited to be bringing grocery-anchored retail to serve southern Woodbury," said Keith Ulstad, senior vice president of development at United Properties, leading the project for Jerry's Enterprises. "Our goal is to create a shopping center that will meet residents' day-to-day needs with amenities such as a grocery store, coffee shop, gas station and pharmacy."
Two other grocery stores opened recently in the northern part of Woodbury: Aldi opened last October in the former Borders Bookstore in Tamarack Village, and SuperTarget opened on Commerce Drive in 2011.
