Student trapshooters at Woodbury High School captured the Conference 2A title during the fall season of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League.

Woodbury High was one of six teams to compete in Conference 2A.

The fall season, running five weeks, was the first to be organized by the league, which has held spring competitions in the past.

Teams include both boys and girls. League rules call for them to do their trapshooting at local gun clubs and for their coaches to submit scores to the state league's website.

This fall, Woodbury High sophomore Ben Jacobus placed first in the conference among male shooters and first overall for all shooters in Conferences 2A and 1A. Jacobus also was the Conference 2A "high gun champion" among boys competing last spring.

Woodbury High senior Jessica Martin placed third among girls shooting this fall in Conference 2A.

Herb Struss, a science teacher, coached the Woodbury team this fall.

The clay target league, a nonprofit group, operates separately from the Minnesota State High School League. It encourages schools to award letters as they do for other sports.

A spring league is planned again next year. Last spring, 57 teams competed in eight conferences.
