Mounds Park Academy grad is Truman scholar

Last update: April 2, 2008 - 12:18 AM

Shemeko (Amy) Hang, the daughter of immigrants, wants to pursue graduate degrees in order to help Hmong immigrants and others from Southeast Asia.

Now the Georgetown University junior and graduate of Mounds Park Academy in Maplewood will have a significant part of her studies paid for.

On Thursday, Hang was one of 65 college juniors nationally -- and the only one with ties to Minnesota -- selected to receive scholarships from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Truman scholars, who hope to pursue graduate degrees in public service fields, receive up to $30,000 for their studies.

Hang, a government major with a minor in justice and peace studies at the Washington, D.C., university, is studying this semester in New Zealand.
