Next summer, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin a $17 million makeover of the intersection of Hwy. 36 and English Street. Representatives will show off the plans and field questions from the public during an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Maplewood Community Center, 2100 White Bear Av.
Traffic lights that control the intersection will be removed and a full-access diamond interchange will be built in 2013. Recent upgrades to Hwy. 36 have left English Street as the only signalized intersection between Hwy. 120 and Interstate 35W. Access to Hwy. 36 at Hazelwood and Atlantic streets will be eliminated.
The project also calls for upgrades to surrounding streets, replacement of the Bruce Vento Trail pedestrian and bicycle bridge, and drainage improvements.
The goal is to improve safety and efficiency along Hwy. 36. It also will allow for reasonable access to businesses and residential properties, MnDOT said.
