The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has rejected Arden Hills' application for a grant that would have been used to build a trail from Valentine Park and Lake Valentine Road to County Road E2.
Arden Hills had sought $150,000 through the DNR's Local Trail Connection Program to help pay for the shared-use path that would have run on the west side of Old Snelling Avenue and created connections to Valentine Hills Elementary, Perry Park and Tony Schmidt Regional Park.
The city was ready to kick in the remainder of the proposed $317,000 project.
It wasn't the only project put on hold: The DNR received 44 requests totaling more than $4 million for the grants, but had just $1 million to allocate.
Creating the path had been identified as a high priority by the city's Parks and Trails and Recreation Committee and by residents of the surrounding neighborhood. City officials will consider reapplying for a grant this fall.
