Two Forest Lake police officers will work in the city's high school and two junior high schools through 2014 in an updated agreement between the city and Independent School District No. 831.

"I would put our relationship with the School District against anybody in the state as far as working together," Capt. Greg Weiss said of the 18-year-old program.

Century and Southwest junior highs will get a resource officer stationed on campus for the school year. They will be assigned to patrol duties during summers. Forest Lake Area High School will get one officer to work year-round on campus.

Officers will be paid $71,136 apiece for the coming school year. The district will pay salaries for time spent at the schools, as well as benefits and training. Weiss said there's value in having an officer at a large high school to work with kids.

"It's a preventative measure to have a relationship with that officer," he said. "When you have a school of 1,800 [students], that's a small city."
