Three men are charged with multiple felonies in connection with a burglary earlier this month in Maplewood that left a Roseville K9 seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Major the German shepherd reached a milestone over the weekend with "small, purposeful movements in his hind legs!!" Roseville police said in an online update posted Monday. The dog suffered three stab wounds, several to the head and one to the chest, causing a collapsed lung and damaged vertebrae. It remains uncertain whether the 9-year-old dog will walk again.
Roel Joseph Perez Jr., 21, of Maplewood; Ryan Neil Dorner, 22, of Mahtomedi and James Ricky McBain, 20, of Maplewood are charged with possession of burglary tools and attempted theft, both felonies, for the Nov. 12 break-in at Truck Utilities in Maplewood. Perez is also charged with killing or harming a public safety dog, a gross misdemeanor, after tearfully admitting to stabbing Major multiple times with a butterfly knife.
According to charges filed Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court:
Police responded at 5 a.m. to a burglary alarm at the business at 2730 English Street, where they found a hole cut in the gate. Officer John Jorgensen entered the yard with Major, who was off leash, when another officer spotted two men later identified as Dorner and McBain running from the yard. Both were arrested.
A short time later, officers heard Major yelping and making high-pitched whining and crying noises before falling silent. They discovered the dog, who was stabbed multiple times. Perez was then arrested after he was caught by a St. Paul K-9 who was biting into his left calf.
Major, whose wounds have healed, is receiving daily therapy at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Center and exercised his legs in a swim tank over the weekend.
Police added that many citizens are offering to help pay for Major's care and treatment. Those interested in contributing can send a check payable to the City of Roseville. Indicate that the donation is to be used for the department's K9 unit and mail it to: K9 Unit, Roseville Police Department, 2660 Civic Center Drive, Roseville, MN 55113.
