Motorists attempting to cross the Stillwater Lift Bridge needed to allow extra time to get across much of Saturday because of a malfunctioning traffic control system.

One of the gate arms that stops traffic when the two-lane bridge was raised became stuck in the down position around 10 a.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.

Traffic had to use one lane and take turns crossing the bridge which connects Stillwater with Houlton, Wis.

MnDOT dispatched a maintenance crew to the scene, and the repairs were complete Saturday night.

About an average of 16,000 vehicles use the Stillwater Lift Bridge each day.
