A personal-care attendant said she was high on drugs when she took $1,016 in August from a locked box that held residents' money at Whispering Pines Ranch, an assisted-living facility in Austin, the Office of Health Facilities Complaints reported last month. The worker initially told a sheriff's deputy she hadn't taken the money. The next day she was pulled over by an Austin police officer and taken to the hospital because she seemed unwell. While the woman was providing insurance information, the officer noticed she had a large amount of cash. After the officer heard of the incident at Whispering Pines Ranch he returned to the hospital, where the woman admitted taking the money. The woman, who had a previous conviction for felony prescription fraud, revealed she had taken a month's supply of Ambien and 14-day supply of Xanax within three days of the theft and didn't recall speaking to the deputy or being pulled over or taken to the hospital. At the time of the theft, she was appealing a decision that barred her from working directly with persons receiving services from state-licensed health and human services programs. The worker was terminated, and criminal charges have been filed. Since the facility reported the theft and changed policy to require two employees be present when client funds are accessed, the office issued no orders. Read the full report here.
