A former supervisor in the Metro Transit Police Department's property and evidence room has been charged with stealing money from the room where she worked.

Jerri Landis, 62, of Waconia, was charged by summons for taking more than $1,300 between March and December 2014, according to a felony criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

In December, transit police employees discovered that money was missing from envelopes in the evidence room safe. Landis admitted to detectives in late December that she took the money to pay rent and other expenses, according to the complaint. She said she took money from 10 envelopes because "she was having trouble making ends meet," the complaint said.

"It was alarming when it was discovered," said Metro Transit spokesman Howie Padilla. "Steps have been taken to be sure something like this does not happen again."

Among the changes was hiring Jill McRae, a former commander with the St. Paul Police Department, to oversee the evidence room.

Padilla said no other cases appear to have been compromised as a result of the theft.

Landis no longer works for Metro Transit.
