The Minneapolis school board approved a preliminary 4.5 percent levy increase in 2016 for improvements at area schools that would add classrooms, lunchrooms and other amenities to the outdated buildings.
The approval will require more community input in the coming months. The board will vote on the final levy amount in December. The board voted 6-3 to pass the preliminary rate.
A homeowner with a $300,000 home value will see a $60.10 increase in taxes for the year if the 4.5 percent levy is passed.
The proposed capital project is estimated to cost $155 million.
It includes improvements to Southwest High School, Sanford Middle School, Webster Elementary School, Seward Montessori and the Wilder Complex.
The district envisions adding 20 news classrooms, a new kitchen and lunchroom to Southwest, 10 classrooms and a new gym at Sanford and a new main office and entry at Seward.
