7:45 a.m. update: Still tough on 35E in east metro, not bad in south metro

For a change, the worst traffic of the morning commute is not on northbound Hwy. 169 or 35W across the Minnesota River. Both of those routes are moving around 30 to 40 miles per hour with only minor delays at the river crossings.  Ahead, things flow well on both routes.

We can't say that for southbound 35E. Things are awful from Edgerton Street into downtown St. Paul. The latest traffic tangler is a wreck where southbound 35E splits off from westbound 694 in Little Canada.

That comes in the work zone that has one lane out of commission, so expect delays in the area.

It's road work that has drivers on Hwy. 65 from 117th Avenue to Hwy. 10 sitting in line. An expanded road work zone that begins at Hwy. 10 and lane restrictions at 93rd Avenue are to blame.

Southbound 35W has off and on pockets of congestion, but at least things are moving. Things were at a near standstill 30 minutes ago when a medical emergency at County 96 brought traffic to a near halt.
