Meeting to deliver update on I-35W transit access and BRT Orange Line

Transit enthusiasts looking for something to do on a rainy Thursday may want to opt for the I-35W Lake Street Transit/Access Project open house.

The latest details on plans for a new transit station at Lake Street, reconstruction of bridges and the freeway between 42nd Street and I-94, bicycle and pedestrian connections to the Midtown Greenway and how art will be woven into the project will be discussed from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Whittier Community Center, 425 W. 26th Street in Minneapolis.

A new transit stop at Lake Street is one of six new stations proposed as part of the Metro Orange Line. That is a BRT Line similar to the Metro Red Line that operates on Cedar Avenue between the Mall of America and Eagan and Apple Valley.

BRT lines are similar to light-rail lines in that they stop only at specific stations. Buses run in dedicated lanes.

The Orange line would run from downtown Minneapolis to Burnsville by way of I-35W. Proposed stops along the 16-mile line include Lake Street, 46th Street, 66th Street, 76th Street, American Blvd., 98th Street and the Burnsville Transit Station.
