Metro Transit has one of the safest transit systems in the country, and 23 officers and six civilians who went beyond the call to keep it that way were honored last week for their efforts.

The 29 individuals were honored during a ceremony Thursday at St. Mary's University in Minneapolis.

“These officers and civilians showed great courage and are to be commended for going above and beyond the call of duty,” Metro Transit Police Chief John Harrington said. “Their actions are a testament to the fact that wherever transit goes, helping hands are along for the ride.”

Andrew Schroeder was named the 2013 Police Officer of the Year. he was recognized for his work as a trainer and mentor to younger officers, investigative work, collaborating with other departments and assisting in apprehending an armed suspect following a foot chase that took place near Metro Transit property. He has been with Metro Transit since 2011.

Sithyvon Chau was recognized with the Timothy Bowe Memorial Award, given to the top part-time officer. The award is given to an officer who displays "exceptional professionalism and dedication," spokesman Drew Kerr said.

Chau, a patrol officer for the City of Roseville, has been with Metro Transit since 2013.

The Chief's Merit Award was given to Lt. Troy Schmitz and Lt. Joanne Sellner. Other officers and six civilians (including a bus diver and a Metro Transit employee) were honored with medals of commendation, merit awards and certificates of appreciation during the 17th annual awards ceremony.

Metro Transit's police department includes 94 full-time and 100 part-time officers who patrol buses and trains.
