Irondale High School Principal Scott Gengler has been hired by Wayzata Public Schools to help oversee the construction of a new high school addition.

At some point, Gengler will also succeed current Wayzata High School Principal Mike Trewick who plans to retire, district officials said.

“Wayzata High School Principal Mike Trewick and I have worked together in recent weeks to discuss options for how to best manage the upcoming high school construction that also considers a succession plan for Mr. Trewick to ensure a smooth principal transition for Wayzata High School when that time comes,” said Wayzata Superintendent Chace Anderson.  “Mr. Gengler’s hiring was a unique opportunity to secure an experienced high school principal with an excellent record of instructional leadership and impressive construction management experience.”

Voters in February overwhelmingly approved $109 million in bond funding to build a high school addition and a new elementary school and to make related infrastructure improvements.

Construction of 172,000 square feet of new high school space is set to begin in the fall of 2014. Once finished, the renovated high school will be able to house 3,900 students. At its current capacity, it is already the largest high school in Minnesota.

While serving as the principal of Watertown-Mayer High School, Gengler helped oversee a $27 million high school renovation project

Gengler will come on board at Wayzata High School on July 1. He lives in Plymouth with his wife and two children who currently attend Wayzata Public Schools.
