District postpones new school at Cityview

It’s now official – Minneapolis Public Schools is delaying the start of what would have been the first of its “partnership schools” at the Cityview building.

The district late Wednesday announced the one-year postponement, citing the delay caused by a court fight over regaining the building from charter school Minnesota School of Science. Although a judge ruled Wednesday that the district can evict the two-year-old charter, she gave it another seven days to come up with back rent.

That makes it “virtually impossible to proceed with the speed necessary to open a program at Cityview,” the statement said.

Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson has proposed partnership schools as a means for teachers at a building to enjoy more freedom from district restricitons in exchange for accountability for results. The delay means she'll have no protoype of those schools in place this year.
