The last major upgrade to Nicollet Mall took place in the 1980s, but there is a plan to freshen up the pedestrian and transit corridor that runs through the heart of downtown Minneapolis.

At today's Minneapolis Transportation and Public Works Committee meeting, members will talk about a plan to rebuild Nicollet between Washington Avenue and Grant Street.

The $30 to $40 million renovation will include reconstruction of the street and sidewalks from building face to building face. A combination of State of Minnesota bond proceeds and assessments of surrounding property owners would pay for the project.

According to a city news release, the upgrade is necessary because "ongoing maintenance and repair costs rising to the point where it's no longer a prudent use of funds."

The Downtown Minneapolis Council also is spearheading the effort, which will link green spaces, shops and offices. It will also cement Nicollet Mall's position "as the region's premiere business, transit and entertainment connection and encourage new investment and development," the release said.

The city will begin looking for four qualified urban design teams through a "request for qualifications" process. Four finalists will be chosen to submit proposals.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2016.

Today's meeting is at 9:30 a.m. at Minneapolis City Hall, 350 S. 5th Street.
