In case you missed it, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently introduced a new app for iPhones and Ipod Touches that provides information on vehicle safety in real time.

It's SaferCar app allows consumers to search for safety ratings for vehicles by makes and model, locate car seat installation help, file a vehicle safety complaint and find recall information. The app also allows users to sign up to receive automatic notices about vehicle recalls.

All the information comes from SaferCar.gov, a consumer-oritented web site from NHTSA. Now it will be accessible in real time, said David Strickland, a NHTSA administrator,

"The new SaferCar app literally puts the latest in vehicle safety information directly in the hands of consumers so they can make the appropriate purchasing and other decisions for themselves and their families," he said.

The site is filled with a mix of consumer news, news on vehicle ratings and recalls, and general safety information.

Among some of the features:
Users can look up crash test data on vehicles and compare them across makes and models.

Consumers can register their vehicles and get notices from NHTSA if safety issues arise or a recall notice is issued. The site also allows users to submit complaints and find information about safety defects.

Motorists can get help on how to properly install a car seat, or get directions to an inspection station where they can get help to propery install their car seats and boosters.

Drivers can get general safety information and news from NHTSA.
