Funeral, tournament bring road closures and extra traffic to St. Paul Friday

The funeral for St. Paul Police Officer Josh Lynaugh will bring road closures to St. Paul Friday, the same day fans will return to the Xcel Energy Center for the third day of the Minnesota State High School Girls' Hockey Tournament.

Here is a guide to getting around the this weekend, along with a look ahead to road work planned for next week in the suburbs.

Friday Road Closings in St. Paul

Services for officer Lynaugh, who died from complications from a heart attack, will be held at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Paul, 239 Selby Avenue.

Several road near the church will be closed from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.  They include:

Summit Avenue between Western Avenue and Marshall Avenue

Selby Avenue between Western Avenue and Summit Avenue

Dayton Avenue between N. Farrington Street and Summit Avenue

Traffic will be prohibitied from those streets, but exceptions will be made for residents, and students and staff who need to access St. Paul College parking lots.

Metro Transit on detour

Routes 21 and 65 will be on detour from 6 a.m. to noon Friday in the area of the Cathedral. Eastbound buses will be detoured to travel on Western Avenue, Concordia Avenue and Kellogg Blvd., then back to their regular routes. 

Westbound buses will follow Kellogg Blvd. and Marion Street, St. Anthony Avenue and Western Avenue, then returning to their regular routes on Selby Avenue.  A temporary bus stop will be in operation on Western Avenue at Selby, along with the regular stop at Kellogg Blvd. and Mulberry.

High School Hockey

The semifinals of the Class 1A and 2A girl's state hockey tournament take place Friday, with the finals on Saturday. Expect extra traffic downtown Friday as four games are on tap beginning at 11 a.m.

Road construction in the suburbs next week

Look for the ramp from eastbound 694 to northbound 35W to be closed Monday for construction.

Also, the right lane of eastbound 694 will be closed from 35W to Snelling Avenue on Monday for construction.

In Lake Elmo, Hwy. 5 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Jamaica Avenue and Hwy. 36 in Stillwater for road maintenance. MnDOT says flaggers will direct traffic during the operation scheduled from noon to 2 p.m.
