Could light rail be in the future for Lake Street?

Posted by: Tim Harlow Updated: January 28, 2013 - 1:33 PM

Light rail on Lake Street in south Minneapolis? That's one of the ideas on the table as Metro Transit looks to create a transitway on the busy thoroughfare or the nearby Midtown Greenway.

The transit agency will show off the Midtown Corridor Alternative Analysis during open houses Monday and Tuesday.

The plan, which also considers bus rapid tranist or streetcars as ideas to  improve mobility, increase ridership and enhance transit connections in the busy commercial corridor, looks at options to determine the benefits, costs and impacts of creating a transitway on the Midtown Greenway or Lake Street in Minneapolis.

Information about the study background, area and current schedule of activities will be provided. Project staff will be on hand to answer questions and take public comments about the project’s purpose and need.

The meetings will be held:

6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Colin Powell Center, 2924 4th Avenue S., Minneapolis.

6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Whittier Park Recreation Center, 425 W. 26th Street, Minneapolis.
