Free rides on Metro Transit for New Year's Eve

Revelers who don't want to drive home from the party on New Year's Eve can get a free ride home on a Metro Transit bus or the Hiawatha Light Rail.

The offer also is good on Minnesota Valley Transit Authority buses.

The transit agencies will provide free rides beginning at 6 p.m. Monday until the last trip on all routes. And in many cases, extra trips have been added to 26 routes to allow those who stay out late into the night a way to get home.

Metro Transit has added two additional southbound trips on the Hiawatha Light Rail. Trains will depart downtown Minneapolis at 2:13 a.m. and 2:57 a.m., said Bruce Howard, a Metro Transit spokesman.

Last year more than 37,000 people took advantage of the offer, which is sponsored by Miller Light, Howard said.

For 16 years, Miller and Metro Transit have partnered for the free ride program on St. Patrick's Day. It was expanded to New Year's Eve for the first time in 2011.

The offer is not good on the Northstar Commuter line.
