Minneapolis isn't rolling up the streets, but the city is cleaning them.

Sweepers hit the streets today, and over the next four weeks crews will do a curb-to-curb cleaning and leaf collection of more than 1,100 miles of roads.

Temporary "No Parking" signs will be posted on affected blocks at least 24 hours before crews come through to give residents notice and ensure streets will be clear of vehicles, a city press release said.

Residents might also get an automated phone call from the city the night before their street is scheduled to get swept. The city said it will make 3,500 calls to affected residents in an effort to get the word out. Vehicles left on a street that is scheduled to be swept could be ticketed and towed.

Announcements also will be made periodically on Twitter and Facebook.

So think of this as a warm up for the Snow Emergency season.

The schedule of street sweeping is posted on the web site http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/publicworks/streetsweeping/index.htm . There, residents (and visitors) can see which week their street will be swept. When their week rolls around, the web site will list exactly which day the sweeper will come down their block.

For the truly curious, the city has produced videos to explain the sweeping process in English, Spanish, Somali and Hmong. You can find them on YouTube or on cable channels 14 and 79.
