With the rash of accidents during Monday's and Tuesday's morning rush, perhaps we need to brush up on our safe driving skills.

No better time to do that than during Drive Safely Work Week, an annual campaign from the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS).

Employers have a vested intersted in getting workers to and from work without car accidents and injuries. According to a 2010 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the cost of medical care and productivity losses associated with injuries from motor vehicle crashes exceeds $99 billion annually. And much of that cost falls on employers.

With the theme "Back to Basics: Your Keys to Safe Driving," this year's effort focuses on safe driving practices and avoiding some of the most common types of traffic crashes.

Through  materials that employers and individuals are encouraged to download from its website (www.trafficsafety.org), NETS encourages drivers to always buckle up and encourage others to do so, be well-rested and not drive when tired, and driving distracted free.

The materials, which are free, also lists tips for safe parking and backing up. They also address ways to prevent rear-end crashes.

"No matter how many years of experience we have or how much driving we do, there are underlying basic skills and behaviors that are fundamental to safe driving that need to be continually practiced," NETS Chairwoman Sandra Lee said. "Much is being said these days about the dangers of distracted driving, yet responsible driving is more than driving distraction-free. This year's Drive Safely Work Week campaign reinforces the wide range of skills needed to be a safe, responsible driver."
