More than 150 firefighters, middle school students and community residents gathered at Marshall's downtown 9/11 Memorial Park shortly before noon Tuesday for a 20-minute service to remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

The park's centerpiece is a nearly 10-foot, 600-pound steel beam that Marshall resident Craig Schafer plucked from the ruins of the World Trade Center remains about a year after the attack on New York City.

The short prayer service ended with city leaders placing a memorial wreath on the rusted beam, which tilts ever so slightly toward New York City.
