This blog covers everything except sports and gardening, unless we find a really good link about using dead professional bowlers for mulch. The author is a StarTribune columnist, has been passing off fiction and hyperbole as insight since 1997, has run his own website since the Jurassic era of AOL, and was online when today’s college sophomores were a year away from being born. So get off his lawn.
Steamy out there today. Steamier tomorrow. It seems we’ll miss the Unnervingly Cold Day we usually get at the Fair - just full-strength summer to the end. Makes you wonder how people dealt with the heat in the era when the dress code a complete suit was required - including undershirts and a vest.
Why, who wouldn’t want to line up on the Grandstand ramp in the sun wearing a corset?
Those details come from this picture:
The Grandstand hosted reenactments of the Minnesota engagement at Gettysburg annually from 1887 - 1889, and brought it back in 1898. The presence of a car in the shot puts the picture in ’98, and I’m surprised it just sits there, almost ignored. Autos were so rare in 1898 the first test of a gas-powered car was undertaken at night, so as not to upset the horses, and the first car was owned in 1899 by a St. Paul Dentist, Dr. I. E. Siqveland. (So says this book.)
Maybe that’s it.
I found that picture on the wall of the State Fair museum in Heritage Square, which is just a mess. It really needs an overhaul. My latest video on that very subject can be found right here. Enjoy!
