Rybak DNC speaking role? Don't count on it

Mayor R.T. Rybak has boosted his public profile lately as an Obama surrogate on cable television, but don't look for him to grace the podium at the Democratic National Convention.

“I highly doubt that," Rybak said when asked about a speaking role at the event in Charlotte this September. "My job is to support the president and be low-maintenance. I just say wind me up and tell me what to do. I just love the guy and I want to help.”

Rybak's spokesman, John Stiles, said the mayor will be attending the DNC. Rybak is both a DNC vice chair and president of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors.

But another mayor will be offering the event's keynote: San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

It's possible Rybak's role could change if Tim Pawlenty gets the nod for vice president, however, since Democrats may be looking for a prominent Minnesotan to jab at the former governor's record.

“I don’t know," Rybak said. "Nothing’s been decided."
