The smiling, sweet-faced boy in the photo looks like he could be about to head to the pool, maybe riding his bike, which is how Nizzel Anthony George, 5, had spent a lot of his summer so far after graduating from kindergarten, according to his grandmother. The incongruity of Nizzel's photo with the news of a homicide was only more pronounced Thursday when a flyer arrived topped with his photo and followed by news of his funeral.

The flyer also included news of a memorial planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at 4500 Bryant Av. N., near the spot where he was killed Tuesday morning in a shooting that remains unsolved. Nizzel was asleep on a couch at his grandmother's house when someone standing across the street fired several rounds into the house. The intentional shooting could have killed more: Nizzel's family said about 10 people were in the house at the time of the shooting, five of them children.

He was hit once in the back. He was pronounced dead at North Memorial Hospital about 30 minutes after the shooting.

His funeral has been scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Temple International Ministries, 1201 W. Broadway. A memorial fund for his family has been established by MAD DADS. Donations accepted at any M & I Bank location, account #4808982714. Make donations payable to MAD DADS for the benefit of Nizzel Anthony George.
