Education reform series begins with achievement gap

The League of Women Voters Minneapolis is beginning a series of four forums on education reform in Minneapolis with a session on efforts to address the racial achievement gap.

The April 16 session will feature a union leader, a charter school director, a school turnaround specialist, a new schools specialist and a former foundation leader. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Av. S.

Appearing are Karen Kelley-Ariwoola, a former Minneapolis Foundation vice president; Eric Mahmoud, founder of Harvest Prep and several other charters; Sara Paul, the director of new schools for the Minneapolis district; Mark Bonine, associate superintendent for turnaround schools; and Lynn Nordgren, president of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers.
