For 2012, Minneapolis Public Schools leaders are proposing a one percent tax levy increase, much less than the nearly 10 percent hike that appeared on resident's truth-in-taxation notices this fall.

My colleague Steve Brandt wrote about how the truth-in-taxation statement that residents received this fall likely wouldn't match up with the district's final recommendation. Brandt reported that administrators assumed a 9.5 percent increase, the maximum allowable (as reflected in this document) only because staff lacked the time to determine what they think the district needs.

The Minneapolis school board's Finance Committee will host a meeting to hear public comment on the proposed levy from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at district headquarter, 807 Broadway Av. NE. The full school board will host a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, also at district headquarters.

According to the district, the recommendation reflects a $6.35 increase for taxpayers with a home value of $150,000, a $14.57 increase for taxpayers with a home value of $300,000 and a $22.63 increase for taxpayers with a home value of $450,000.

The increase would bring in an estimated $1.9 million; the district had the authority to increase the levy by $15.6 million.
