Salvation Army says holiday needs are 'staggering'

Last update: November 25, 2009 - 8:41 PM

The demand from families needing assistance this holiday season from the Salvation Army in the Twin Cities area has more than doubled, the charity reported Wednesday.

Since Nov. 9, an average of 709 families per day have registered for assistance, up from 308 last year.

Registered families receive toys and grocery gift cards at Salvation Army Toy Shops in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Burnsville and Roseville, beginning Dec. 17.

"We expected an increase in need this year, but this is staggering," said Maj. Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. "We are dedicated to providing for families as our resources allow. This will be a challenge."

Next to bell ringing, the Salvation Army's largest volunteer need is happening now through Dec. 22 at its headquarters in Roseville. About 100 people are needed to field questions from Toy Shop-registered families. To assist with this activity or to ring bells, please visit www.thesalarmy.org or call 651-746-3400.

Registration for Christmas assistance ends Dec. 10. Families in need can sign up by calling 651-746-3595 or online at www.thesalarmy.org/toyshop.
