WASHINGTON, D.C.

Netanyahu will come to White House

The White House announced that President Obama would be meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israeli prime minister's trip to Washington to address Jewish groups, ending days of uncertainty. Netanyahu is to meet with Obama this evening. U.S.-Israeli relations have been strained since Netanyahu rejected Obama's demand that the Israeli government stop building or expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank. The Palestinians say Israel has deeply encroached into land the Palestinians claim for a future state.

COLORADO

Bar shooting suspect faces murder charge

A man suspected of fatally shooting one person and wounding three others in a Vail bar has been arrested in what authorities say was apparently a random shooting. Longtime Vail resident Richard Moreau, 63, is accused of firing several shots outside and in the Sandbar Sports Grill in the mountain ski resort town. He was arrested Saturday at the scene. Police said Gary Bruce Kitching, 70, of Carbondale, Colo., was fatally shot.

YEMEN

Saudis take mountain from Shiite rebels

Saudi Arabian forces seized a strategic mountain straddling the border with Yemen and cleared it of Shiite rebels after five days of fighting that left three Saudi soldiers dead, a Saudi defense official said. Meanwhile, rebels said they shot down a Yemeni fighter jet. Yemen attributed the crash to a "technical error." Saudi forces began attacking rebel positions last week, dramatically escalating a five-year conflict between Yemen's weak central government and rebels in the north of the impoverished country. The Saudi government cooperates with Yemen to fight the Shiite rebels, known as Hawthis, out of fears that extremism and instability in Yemen could spill into its country, the world's largest oil exporter.

Chinese premier pledges aid to Africa

At a China-Africa summit in Sharm el-Sheik, China's premier pledged $10 billion in new low-interest loans to African nations over three years, offering the beleaguered continent sorely needed cash while dismissing criticism that Beijing's motives in Africa are far from altruistic. Wen Jiabao's promise at the start of the summit was warmly received by African leaders and officials. Wen said the $10 billion in loans was part of an eight-point plan, including forgiving government debts of the poorest African nations that have relations with Beijing and building 100 new clean-energy projects for the continent, he said.

EL SALVADOR

124 dead, 60 missing as mudslides bury town

Mud and boulders loosened by heavy rain swept down a volcano and partly buried the small town of Verapaz, swallowing up homes as flooding and landslides across the country killed at least 124 people, authorities said. Hundreds of soldiers, police and residents dug through rock and debris looking for 60 more people missing from the predawn mudslide. Nearly 7,000 people saw their homes damaged by landslides or cut off by floodwaters after three days of downpours from a low-pressure system related to Hurricane Ida, which brushed Mexico's Cancun area before steaming into the Gulf of Mexico.

INDONESIA

Strong quake kills at least two people

A strong undersea earthquake killed two people and damaged buildings on the remote island of Sumbawa in central Indonesia. At least 20 people were hospitalized on the island after the 6.7-magnitude temblor, many of them with broken bones, officials said. The quake damaged streets and schools, while a landslide blocked a main road linking the town of Bima to the remote districts. Indonesia is still clearing the rubble from a devastating 7.6-magnitude quake on West Sumatra that killed more than 1,100 people in September.
