Body found near Two Harbors is missing kayaker, sheriff says

Last update: November 6, 2009 - 8:20 PM

DULUTH - Authorities say a body found Thursday afternoon on the north shore of Lake Superior was that of a missing kayaker and former Milwaukee school teacher.

Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson says Friday that the medical examiner confirms the body is that of 48-year-old Douglas R. Winter. The official cause of death has not been determined.

The body was recovered just north of Two Harbors in the Flood Bay area, roughly where searchers expected to find it given the wave patterns of the past few weeks.

Winter was last heard from about 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 19, when he called a friend to say he was two to three miles from shore and the waves were getting bigger.

His kayak washed ashore Oct. 20 in the Beaver Bay area.
