Pickup driver killed in crash with truck

Last update: November 5, 2009 - 9:18 PM

A commercial truck driver ran a stop sign in southeastern Minnesota and crashed into a pickup truck, killing the pickup's driver, authorities said.

The crash happened shortly after noon Tuesday at Wabasha County Roads 2 and 33 in Lake City, the Sheriff's Office said.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Magdaleno Chavez, 39, of Lake City, was driving south on County Road 2 when he entered the intersection with 33 and was struck by a semitrailer truck owned by Wescott Agri Products of Elgin, Minn.

"Preliminary investigation found that the semitractor failed to stop for the stop sign," Chief Sheriff's Deputy Joe Modjeski said. Chavez died at the scene.

The semi was driven by Kenneth E. Tlougan, 46, of Oronoco, Minn.

Tuesday's crash remains under investigation, and there is no immediate word on whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
