St. Paul man convicted of illegally possessing ammunition

A St. Paul man was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to 15 years in prison for illegally possessing ammunition, the U.S. attorney's office said.

In December 2008, Thomas Allen Boldt, 41, was found with eight rounds of Remington .38 Special ammunition. Police searched him after an attempt to shoplift a tube of Orajel at a Rainbow Foods in St. Paul, according to federal court records.

Boldt pleaded guilty to the charge in June as part of an agreement. He also was sentenced by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Michael Davis to five years of supervised release.

As a convicted felon, Boldt was prohibited from having firearms or ammunition. In a court filing arguing the sentence, Boldt said he did not know it was illegal for him to have the rounds, which he said he got from a friend and was going to make into jewelry.

Boldt's convictions came in Ramsey, Dakota, Washington and Carlton counties and include ones for burglary, motor-vehicle theft, escape from custody and check forgery, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
