A barefoot hunter lost in the woods of rural Beltrami County was rescued early Wednesday morning after sheriff's deputies were able to use his faint cell phone signal to track him down.
The sheriff's office reported today that Rowdy Schipper, 44, was being treated for frostbite and hypothermia at North Regional Hospital in Bemidji.
A sheriff's dispatcher received a call from Schipper about 3:30 a.m. The resident of Puposky, Minn., told the dispatcher he didn't know where he was and had lost his boots and socks, the department reported.
The dispatcher was able to keep Schipper on the line long enough to use the phone's signal to establish his general location.
Deputies and local rescue agencies tracked him to a site in Quiring Township, just south of Lower Red Lake near state Hwy. 1.
