COLERAINE, MINN. - A fatal crash involving a car and a school bus carrying the Ely High School football team forced officials to cancel Friday night's homecoming game and dance scheduled at Onamia High School.

The State Patrol said the crash happened about 3:30 p.m. at Hwy. 169 and Curley Avenue in Coleraine, which is about 20 miles southwest of Hibbing.

The car, a 2003 Ford Taurus, was crossing Hwy. 169 and headed west when it pulled out in front of the bus, the patrol said.

Three females in the car -- the 18-year-old driver from Grand Rapids and two passengers, both from Bovey -- were airlifted to Duluth hospitals.

One passenger, Emerald Foss, 18, died about 6 p.m. in the emergency room at St. Mary Medical's Center, according to the patrol.

The driver of the Taurus, Hailey Salo, was listed in critical condition at St. Mary's.

The other passenger, Paige Anderson, 16, was in critical condition at St. Luke's Hospital.

The only injury reported on the bus was a minor one to driver Jay Poshak, 28, of Ely. Also on board were 23 players and three coaches, according to the patrol.

The Taurus was totaled and the bus had severe damage, the patrol added.
