An 8-week-old female golden retriever mix, rescued with gunshot wounds to her face and head, arrived in the Twin Cities from western Minnesota on Friday afternoon for treatment and eventual adoption.
Carly was turned over by a good Samaritan in Wheaton, Minn., and transported by Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota (RAGOM), a golden retriever rescue organization.
Joan Barnes, who is tending to Carly, said that the dog has a swollen face, runny eyes and a possibly pierced nasal cavity from a bullet fragment. Also, the puppy has three small holes in her forehead that appear to have been caused by buckshot or a BB gun.
The dog, wearing no identification, was first found wounded and bloodied by police on Sisseton-Wahpeton tribal property in eastern South Dakota, Barnes said.
"Unfortunately, that happens a lot [in that region]," Barnes said. "There are all kinds of shelters and rescue outfits [available]. You don't need to shoot them."
Since 1985, RAGOM has found homes for more than 3,000 goldens. For anyone interested in adopting Carly or another golden retriever, visit www.ragom.org.
