Minneapolis police identified the officer who shot an armed suspect Sunday morning as officer Chad Meyer.

Meyer shot and wounded Chebo N. Chomilo, 18, after responding to a call that shots had been fired, according to police.

Officers responded at about 3:30 a.m. to 19th Street and Park Avenue S. They found two male suspects near 14th Street and Park Avenue, according to police. One of the suspects, Jules N. Chomilo, 19, was arrested for probable cause receiving and concealing stolen property. Chebo N. Chomilo fled on foot.

A confrontation ensued between Chebo Chomilo and officers between Park and Chicago Avenues, according to a police news release. Police have not said what the confrontation entailed or whether the suspect threatened police.

"I'm not free to share those details at this point in the investigation," police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer has said.

During the confrontation, Meyer fired his weapon, wounding Chebo Chomilo. He is at Hennepin County Medical Center being treated for a non-life-threatening wound, according to a news release issued Monday. He was arrested for probable cause second-degree assault. The suspects have not been officially charged.

Officers David Campbell, Christopher Cushenbery and Sean Lessard and Sgt. Paul Hatle also responded to the scene and witnessed the incident. Meyer and all of the police witnesses were put on paid administrative leave, which is standard in such cases.

Meyer joined the department in 2008 after working with the Chisago County Sheriff's Office. He has worked in the First and Third Precincts, and was nominated in 2008 for a departmental medal of valor for subduing a gang member who had fired gunshots at citizens and officers, according to a news release.

The department's homicide and internal affairs units are investigating.
