Minneapolis cop shoots, wounds armed suspect

Last update: June 28, 2009 - 11:59 PM

A Minneapolis police officer shot and wounded an armed suspect early Sunday after responding to a call that shots had been fired, according to police.

Officers called about 3:30 a.m. to 19th Street and Park Avenue S. located two male suspects near 14th Street and Park Avenue, according to police. One of them complied with police commands and was arrested. The other, who was armed with a gun, fled on foot. A third suspect could not be located.

When officers chased the armed suspect on 14th Street, a "confrontation" ensued between the suspect and officers between Park and Chicago Avenues, according to a police news release. Police spokesman Sgt. William Palmer would not say what the confrontation entailed or whether the suspect threatened police.

"I'm not free to share those details at this point in the investigation," he said.

During the confrontation, at least one officer fired his weapon, wounding the suspect, the news release said.

He was taken into custody and treated for his injury, Palmer said. His injuries were not critical.

The department's homicide and internal affairs units are investigating. Several officers at the scene are on paid administrative leave, which is protocol in such circumstances.

The names of the officers involved will be released today, police said.
