Golden Valley man killed in Itasca County accident

Last update: June 23, 2009 - 12:45 AM

A Golden Valley man was killed Monday afternoon in northern Minnesota in a one-car crash that authorities say happened because the driver fell asleep.

Keith Heimer, 56, was a passenger in the car, which was heading south on Hwy. 46 near Squaw Lake in Itasca County around 4 p.m. when it crossed over the northbound lane and landed in the ditch, striking trees, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Heimer, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, the State Patrol reported.

The driver, 48-year-old Mark Heimer of White Bear Lake, and another passenger, 32-year-old Rhett Witschen of Eagan, were treated for cuts and bruises.
