Seventeen Minnesota students earned top honors Thursday in the annual National History Day competition.
More than a half-million elementary and secondary students compete each year in the contest. Students extensively research and analyze a historical topic and present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries.
After making their way through local and state competitions, 32 Minnesota students made it to the national finals held this week at the University of Maryland.

Jack Schnettler, Blake School in Minneapolis, who won second place in the senior paper category.
Max Johnson, Blake School, who won second place for an individual performance.
